CE Course Description 

Human trafficking is a public health concern. All healthcare providers have a duty to be able to recognize and intervene if someone is being trafficked. Healthcare agencies should have protocols specifically addressing human trafficking. The focus of this training will be on youth and adults in the United States health care settings. Definitions of human trafficking will be explored, as well as information on how to identify indicators of exploitation. Trauma-informed clinical treatment interventions will be provided. A review of how law enforcement should be involved will take place by understanding state-level legal mandates for reporting human trafficking. Participants will be presented with how to access national and local resources for assistance if an individual is identified as someone impacted by human trafficking.

1. Define the types and venues of human trafficking in the United States.
2. Identify victims of human trafficking in health care settings. 
3. Recognize the warning signs of human trafficking in healthcare settings for adults and minors by selecting the correct indicators from the given options.
4. Discover local and national community resources for supporting and reporting the suspected victims of human trafficking.

Introduction (5 minutes)

• Discussion on the overall scope of the issue and its impact on individuals and communities.

Section 2: Factors Driving the Crisis (15 minutes)

• Key drivers behind the crisis, including social, economic, and systemic factors.

Section 3: Responding to the Crisis (20 minutes)

• Public health responses, harm reduction strategies, and community-based interventions.

Section 4: Treatment and Recovery Services (20 minutes)

• Overview of available treatment modalities, rehabilitation approaches, and support systems.

Section 5: Law Enforcement and Legal Responses (15 minutes)

• Legal frameworks and law enforcement strategies being used to address the crisis.

Section 6: Addressing Stigma and Promoting Compassion (15 minutes)

• The role of stigma, its impact on recovery, and how to foster a more compassionate societal response.

Section 7: Policy Implications and Advocacy (10 minutes)

• Review of policy changes, advocacy efforts, and their implications for the future.

Section 8: Committing to Collaboration and Action (5 minutes)

• The importance of cross-sector collaboration and the collective action needed to address the issue.

Conclusion (5 minutes)

• Recap of key points, final reflections, and encouragement for ongoing learning and advocacy.
