CE Course Description

As a result of technological advances, the pornography industry is expanding rapidly and aggressively.  The purpose of this intermediate level continuing education course, developed using information from Dignity: A Journal on Sexual Exploitation and Violence, is to examine how pornography can shape real world sexual behaviors and expectations.  Evidence from academic literature across disciplines and from contemporary news and criminal law cases is presented, with particular emphasis on the nature and extent of detrimental consequences for women, adolescents, and children.

CE Course Objectives

  1. Summarize literature pertaining to the role of pornography in influencing real-world sexual behaviors and expectations.
  2. Identify the role of technology in advancing and changing the pornography industry.
  3. Explore how women, adolescents, and children are impacted by the detrimental consequences of pornography.
  4. Describe gonzo porn and explore the connection between behaviors celebrated in gonzo pornography and real-world sexual violence towards women.
  5. Discuss the effects of porn on sexual health and social well-being.
  6. Differentiate between pseudo child porn (PCP) and genuine child exploitation material (CEM) and how interest in both can increase the risk of child abuse.
  7. Evaluate the complex relationship between the rise of pornography and overall cultural change that has occurred with the internet, smartphones, and other technological advances.
  8. Outline the limitations of research and data about pornography prevalence and impact, including how sophisticated technologies are used to protect networks and communities of users.

  13. Promoting risky sexual behavior (15 mins)
  14. Multiple partner sex (10 mins)
  15. Pornography endangers children (10 mins)
  16. Fueling further abuse of children (10 mins)
