CE Course Description

Changes in marijuana laws and policies for medical and/or recreational use suggest that marijuana is gaining greater acceptance in our society. The purpose of this brief intermediate level continuing education course, developed using information from the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), is to summarize the most current information science has to offer about marijuana and its effects on those who use it at any age. The scope of its use across the United States, methods of consumption, short and long-term effects, and medical uses are discussed.  In addition, marijuana dependence and addiction are addressed as well as available treatment options.

CE Course Objectives

1. Identify various forms of marijuana and methods of consumption.
2. Describe the scope of marijuana use in the United States and how consumption rates and use patterns have evolved.
3. Summarize the short and long-term effects of marijuana use and how it produces these effects.
4. Discuss how marijuana use may affect school, work, and social health and its linkage to psychiatric disorders.
5. Evaluate the safety and efficacy of marijuana for medicinal purposes.
6. Outline characteristics of marijuana dependence and addiction as well as available treatment options.

Part 1: Marijuana Overview (15 mins)

1. What is Marijuana (5 mins)
   1. Explanation of marijuana and its primary components.
2. THC (5 mins)
   1. Overview of THC and its psychoactive properties.
   2. THC’s chemical structure and how it interacts with the body.
3. Marijuana’s Effects on the Brain (5 mins)
   1. Short-term and long-term effects on brain function.
   2. Marijuana use disorder and rising potency concerns.

Part 2: Marijuana’s Effects on Health (20 mins)

1. Development and Cognitive Impact (5 mins)
   1. Marijuana exposure during developmental stages.
   2. Impact on memory and the hippocampus.
2. Gateway Drug Concerns (5 mins)
   1. Discussion on marijuana’s role in preceding the use of other substances.
3. Physical Health Effects (10 mins)
   1. Adverse consequences of marijuana use
   2. Effects on lung health and other aspects of physical health
   3. Secondhand smoke exposure and its risks 
   4. Marijuana use during pregnancy and its effects on the baby

Part 3: Marijuana and Medicine (10 mins)

1. Is Marijuana Safe and Effective as Medicine? (5 mins)
   1. Medical marijuana legalization and its outcomes on opioid prescription use.
2. Available Treatments for Marijuana Use Disorders (5 mins)
   1. Overview of treatment options and support mechanisms.

Conclusion (10 mins)

1. Summary of Key Points (10 mins)
   1. Recap of marijuana’s effects on brain, health, and development.
   2. Discussion of its medicinal use and associated risks.
